112th Michigan Grocers Fall
Conference Wrap Up
MGA Fall Conference is a GRAND Success
Mackinac Island’s Grand Hotel welcomed MGA members from across
the state and beyond for the 112th Annual MGA
Conference. Nearly 250 retailers, suppliers and exhibitors
settled in for two and a half days of first-class speakers, an
engaging food show and unique networking and idea-exchange
opportunities.

Monday, September 13
Breakfast & Annual Business Meeting:
Breakfast kicked off the MGA Annual Business Meeting, during
which MGA directors where introduced (below). Chairman Joe
Risdon and President Linda M. Gobler updated members on crucial
legislative and regulatory matters, previewing the challenges
and opportunities of the coming year.
Opening Session:
The morning general sessions got high marks from many in
attendance. “The speakers were excellent. After hearing Bob
Livingston, I wanted to pack up and get back to the store to
share and use his ideas,” said Don Bastianello of Angeli Foods.
Copies of Livingston’s excellent book, How You Do What You Do,
were sponsored by Crossmark Sales Agency and delivered to
guests’ rooms courtesy of Great North Foods.

The MGA Food Show:
The consensus among retailers was that the food show was
right-sized and on-target, exposing them to new products that
will attract shoppers. “We were able to make some new
connections,” said Ian Smith of Duthler’s Family Foods. Newly
elected director Jim Nader, president of Plumb’s Inc., added, “I
thought the food show was very beneficial for us. We will now
start doing business with three of the vendors who we had not
dealt with before.”

Oleson Dinner
The conference closed with a wonderful dinner at The Hagerty
Center in Traverse City, located at Northwestern Michigan
College’s Great Lakes Campus and home of both the school’s
Culinary Institute and Maritime Academy. A celebration of
Oleson’s Food Stores 75-year MGA membership was the theme, and
it included a short program honoring the family-owned business.
MGA President Linda Gobler presented DJ Oleson with a Tribute
from the Michigan Legislature and Governor Jennifer Granholm, as
well as a plaque commemorating the occasion from MGA and the
dinner sponsors. “Five generations of the Oleson family have
made significant contributions to our state, including Oleson’s
Vice President, DJ Oleson, who is also Vice Chairman of MGA’s
Board of Directors,” said Gobler. “We are so fortunate to have
him on our board.”
Oleson’s family members and employees gathered to enjoy the
event.
We look forward to seeing you next year at
